The square has the usual quadrangular shape, typical of the colonized towns of the 13th century. On all sides it is enclosed by houses. The originally wooden houses of the townspeople, mostly dating back to the 16th century, were rebuilt of bricks. Their present look dates back to the 18-20th centuries. In spite of the wars, natural disasters, reconstructions and modernization the houses in the square went through, they have still preserved elements of the Baroque, Classical and Art Nouveau styles. The houses located in the square and the adjacent streets are still lined with arcades, facing the square with their vaulted arches supported by stone pillars. The square was paved already in the 16th century most likely with boulders brought from the riverbed of the River Úpa. A similar pavement has been preserved until the present around the Column of the Holy Trinity and around the plaque in the pavement in the south-eastern corner of the square, commemorating the events of the 1866 Prussian-Austrian War.
